Nearly everyone who goes on a cruise buys something while they're onboard. Hopefully, every purchase is worth it, but unfortunately, some things are considered as #cruisepurchaseregrets.
Without further ado, here's the list.
Souvenir Cups Yes, the souvenir cups are fun. Yes, the souvenir cups are cute (think Carnival). But is it really worth it? On average, buying your drink in a keeper cup or souvenir glass can cost you an extra $2-5 per drink! Then what about when you get off the ship? Granted, sometimes those cups will get used again at home, but what happens if there just isn't an extra room in your luggage to take it home? What happens if the souvenir glasses (real glass) break? Pro tip: You may just want to save your money and the space in your luggage and skip this purchase both on the ship and while in port.
Thermal Spa Passes So many cruisers actually love the thermal spa, however they may only use the pass for a day or two, but find a pass for the length of the entire cruise to be a waste of money. This is how I see it: If you're cruising somewhere warm, like the Caribbean, it's typically pretty warm weather. Conversely, if you're destination is somewhere in a cooler climate, such as Alaska, it might be worth it. Pro tip: Research your ship's thermal spa ahead of time, or even wait to book until you're onboard. That way, you can have a better idea of what to expect while aboard your particular cruise ship.
Onboard Purchases Who doesn't like shopping? Especially when it's duty free! However, some items just may not be worth it. Keep reading. There are some items that you should be wary about, such as name-brand watches, gold plated jewelry that is purchased by the inch, and "silver" jewelry that can be found in ports. Unfortunately, some cruise-goers complain about the gold plating on their necklace or bracelet wearing off, and the "silver" jewelry may land you finding your skin turning green. Pro tip: Do a quick online check to compare prices. You may find out that some items are still worth buying! Regardless, it is of importance to only make jewelry purchases at reputable stores.
Arcade If you're cruising with your kids, you may find yourself spending some time in the arcade. The arcades don't take cash or coins. Instead, the games are played by using the passenger's cruise card. Needless to say, this can get out of hand quickly. Pro tip: Set spending limits on the kids' cruise cards. Guest services will be able to assist in setting those limits.
Casino Slot Machines Many cruise passengers love the casino, especially the slot machines. Sadly, at the end of the day, too many people are stating they lost way more than they won. Although the casinos are fun, people do sometimes regret spending too much money in the casino.
Deal or No Deal and Bingo Bingo and Deal or No Deal are a big hit with some cruisers, but is playing the games worth it? Whereas these games can be super fun, they can be rather pricey to play. There are valuable prizes that can be won, such as money or a free cruise, but most people end up saying they regret over spending on these games.
Drink Packages Because there is often an extremely limited selection of beverages included with your normal cruise fare, drink packages often show up on "things that are worth it" lists when it comes to cruising. Cruise lines offer a variety of drink packages, such as sodas and juices, coffees, specialty drinks, and of course, alcoholic drinks. These packages can be very expensive. Pro tip: Do your research and compare costs to see if a drink package would be worth it to you.
Shore Excursions through the Cruise Line Reserving a shore excursion, although it has its perks, can be quite expensive. Also, if you wait too long, your first pick might be sold out. Pro tip: Researching every cruise port you'll be visiting will help you to decide if a cruise ship excursion is best, or if there is something you can explore on your own.
Massage at the Spa Vacations are meant for rest and relaxation, so a logical thought would be a visit to the ship's spa for a massage, but they are usually way more expensive than if you were to get the same treatment at home. But the cost isn't the biggest reason cruisers have regrets later on. Ever been to the spa on a cruise ship? They will try to upsell you on products and additional services until you're blue in the face! Too many cruisers say that spa staff pushing the sale of lotions and other products can be very annoying. Pro tip: If you do decide to book a massage at the spa, you may want to let the staff know early on that you will not be purchasing any additional products.
Premium Wifi Package Although cruise ship wifi has improved over the last few years, it is still rather costly, not very fast, and doesn't have the best reliability. Generally, the basic wifi package is enough to be able to keep in touch. The social packages are less expensive as well, if you are trying to keep your extras at a minimum. Pro tip: You can use the internet while you're in cruise ports. You can also check with your provider what packages may be available to you.
BONUS! Whereas this may not be considered a regret, it can be a money saving tip! Want to make reservations at the steakhouse (think Carnival)? You don't have to! Although limited on choices, the main dining room has a few selections from the steakhouse menu that you can have for dinner. Yes, there is an upcharge, but it's roughly half the cost than a meal at the steakhouse. Happy Cruising! @TravelAgentDebi
